FAST TRACK TO ELITE STATUS WITH THE AMERICAN AIRLINES PLATINUM CHALLENGE
Today we provide a brief update on our preferred airline elite status shortcut.
We’ve covered the American Airlines Platinum Challenge before here.
The American Airlines Platinum Challenge is an under the radar shortcut to platinum status with American Airlines. Platinum status is equal to Oneworld Sapphire status, so achieving platinum status will grant you access to benefits across the entire Oneworld network, such as lounge access, free extra legroom seats, vip check-in and a better chance of upgrades. Oneworld airlines include airlines such as British Airways, Qantas and Cathay Pacific, so no matter whether you’re based in London, Sydney or Hong Kong, completing this challenge could be of benefit if you’re a regular flyer.
With American Airlines having recently merged with US Airways, many readers have asked us whether the challenge is still valid. The answer is yes, although the rules have been changed slightly. One of our writers signed up for the challenge just last week, and will hit American Airlines Platinum status with just one return flight on British Airways from London to Sydney in the next month. It’s that easy.
American Airlines Platinum Challenge 2016 Procedure
Here is a quick recap on the requirements and procedure for completing the American Airlines Platinum Challenge:
- Call American Airlines on their customer service number.
- State that you would like to complete the Platinum Challenge and pay the $USD 200 fee.
- You then need to gain 12500 Elite Qualifying Miles (EQMs) within the 90 days period by flying on one of the qualifying Oneworld airlines such as American Airlines, British Airways or Qantas. Not all Oneworld airlines qualify. Remember that EQMs are not the same as miles – you will need to check the partner airline tables to calculate how many EQMs your miles will generate. Partner airline tables may have recently changed so make sure you check this carefully to ensure that you will receive enough EQMs.
- Your platinum status will then be granted within a few days of achieving 12500 EQMs.
In summary, the American Airlines Platinum Challenge remains a fantastic shortcut to airline elite status and is very achievable, especially if you have long haul flights on the horizon. Follow the steps above and fast track your way to all the perks associated with Oneworld Sapphire status.
